Longships Lighthouse

Longships Lighthouse stands on Carn Bras, the highest of the Longships islets about two kilometres off Land’s End in Cornwall. Built in the late 18th century, it replaced an earlier private venture that had left keepers struggling with debt and poor visibility. The present granite tower, over thirty-six metres tall, was completed in 1873 to designs by William Douglass and supervised by Michael Beazeley. Its first-order optic, built by Chance Brothers, used an eight-wick oil lamp before later changes introduced electricity. The lighthouse once relied on explosive fog signals and a fog bell, both now replaced by modern equipment. The station’s history shows how lighthouse technology evolved through successive crises and improvements. In 1898 a ship nearly destroyed the tower during a clear night, prompting better signals. Keepers endured long delays in reliefs and even smoked coffee when tobacco ran low in 1901. A helipad added in 1974 made access safer, and full automation in 1988 ended the need for resident keepers. Trinity House now monitors the light from Harwich, while the optic now flashes twice every ten seconds using solar power. Visitors to Sennen Cove see the keepers’ cottages built in 1855, facing the lighthouse across the water. The tower itself rises from a rock pinnacle thirteen metres above high tide, its lantern visible up to thirty-five kilometres on clear nights. Red sectors warn vessels near Cape Cornwall or Gwennap Head, while a fog horn sounds once every ten seconds when visibility drops. The scene combines rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and the stark white granite of the lighthouse against the Atlantic sky.
