New Theatre Oxford

The New Theatre stands on George Street in central Oxford. It is a large commercial theatre with seating for about 1,785. The site has held a theatre since 1836, when the first building opened as a music hall. A second theatre replaced it in 1886, designed by Harry Drinkwater and used by both university and professional companies. Fire damaged the second theatre in 1892, and it was enlarged in 1908. The Dorrill family managed the venue from 1908 until 1972. The present building dates from 1933 and was designed by the Milburn Brothers in Art Deco style. T. P. Bennett and Sons created the interior decoration, originally in deep brown with gilt friezes. The theatre introduced a revolving stage in 1934 and increased capacity to about 2,000. During the Second World War, around half a million troops attended free performances. Stanley Dorrill received an MBE for his wartime work at the theatre. Visitors find a grand auditorium with Art Deco details and a revolving stage still in use. The theatre hosts major touring productions, concerts and annual pantomimes. Past pantomime stars include Des O’Connor, Lulu, Freddie Garrity and Anne Charleston. The stage has also welcomed pop and rock acts alongside plays and musicals. The building remains a focal point for Oxford’s cultural life.
