St Peter's College

St Peter’s College sits in central Oxford on New Inn Hall Street, a site once home to medieval halls such as Trilleck’s Inn and Rose Hall. The college grew from St Peter’s Hall, founded in 1929 by Bishop Francis James Chavasse to offer affordable Oxford education. It became a full college in 1961 and has been co-educational since 1979. The site includes buildings from earlier centuries, including a 1797 rectory now used as the library and porter’s lodge. The college chapel, built in 1874, holds memorials to the Chavasse family, including Captain Noel Chavasse’s original grave cross. The college’s quads reflect its layered history. Linton Quad centres on the chapel and library, while Hannington Quad preserves part of New Inn Hall from 1832, now the dining hall. Chavasse Quad includes the converted Central Girls’ School and a 2018 building offering student rooms and seminar spaces. Castle Bailey Quad, opened in 2024, houses undergraduates in Damazer House and Westfield House, named for wartime visitors from Westfield College. Off-site annexes provide further accommodation near the main site. Students organise events through the Junior Common Room, including formal dinners and arts magazine Misc. The college shares sports fields with Exeter and Hertford Colleges, offering pitches for cricket, rugby and hockey. The boat club competes regularly from a shared boathouse. The Morris Building and Matthews block in Mulberry Quad provide student rooms and a bar. The college’s master’s lodge, Canal House, overlooks the canal, linking past and present.
