Wimbledon Park tube station

Wimbledon Park station stands on Arthur Road near the eastern edge of Wimbledon Park in south-west London. It sits between Wimbledon and Southfields stations on the Wimbledon branch of the District line, about 200 metres west of Durnsford Road. The station opened in 1889 when the District Railway extended its line from Putney Bridge to Wimbledon. Electric trains began running on the line in 1905 after conversion from steam. Main line services through the station ended in 1941, though South Western Railway trains still pass through without stopping. The station has a history tied to several railway companies. It was originally built by the London and South Western Railway and later operated by the Southern Railway. British Rail branding remained until 1994 when ownership transferred to London Underground. In 2012, a serious incident occurred near the station involving a cricketer. Step-free access was added in 2021 as part of a wider accessibility programme. London Buses route 156 serves the station. The site was once considered for Crossrail 2, which would have replaced District line services. The station’s surroundings include Wimbledon Park, a large green space to the east. Its location makes it a quiet entry point to the area’s transport network.
