Hegerberg

The Hegerberg is a forested mountain in the Gutenstein Alps of Lower Austria, rising as a smooth three-sided cone. It stands between the Traisen valley to the west, the upper Halbachtal to the east and the headwaters of the Schwarza to the south. Three river systems meet here: the Traisen, the Gölsen and the Leitha, making it a triple watershed point. The mountain is rarely climbed, but one short route starts at Werasöd in the south. From there the path crosses forest tracks and unmarked trails north of the Hirschenkogel before reaching the summit. The climb covers just over 400 metres of elevation gain. At the top walkers find open ground with wide views across the surrounding Alps. The slopes below carry scattered farmsteads and small settlements such as Hohenberg, Hofamt, Landshof and Innerhalbach. The Kalte Kuchl pass lies to the southeast, linking the region’s valleys.
