Jochart Berg

The Jochart is a mountain in the Gutensteiner Alps of Lower Austria, standing 1,266 metres above sea level. It rises near Rohr im Gebirge and overlooks the border between Wiener Neustadt and Lilienfeld districts. The peak forms a short ridge running west to east, with steeper slopes on the northern side. Most of the mountain is covered in forest, but open clearings and meadows lie south and west of the summit. An alpine pasture sits on the southern flank, adding to the varied landscape.
The Jochart is far quieter than its neighbours, the Unterberg and Reisalpe, and has no mountain huts. This remoteness keeps the slopes free from crowds and preserves the natural scenery. The summit cross stands surrounded by trees, yet the open clearings offer wide views from the Schneeberg to the Ötscher and even into the Gesäuse range. The mountain is known for its unspoilt character and is called the ‘Schattenblümchen der Voralpen’—the little shadow flower of the foothills. It remains a fine choice for those seeking solitude and alpine scenery without the usual traffic.
Two marked paths lead from Rohr im Gebirge to the top. One route passes large farms before climbing gently to about 900 metres, then turns sharply and rises steeply from the south. The other follows the Klausbach stream, turns into the narrow In der Öd gorge, and ascends steeply to the saddle of Hammerleck before continuing along the eastern ridge. In winter the Jochart is a safe destination for ski tours, and in deep snow it also suits snowshoe walks. A 1974 plane crash left parts of an aircraft still visible on the slopes, adding a touch of history to the mountain’s wild setting.
