Dunmail Raise

Dunmail Raise is a mountain pass in the English Lake District, linking the Vale of Grasmere to the Thirlmere valley. It sits at the lowest crossing point between the northern and southern parts of the range, rising only to 238 metres. The pass forms part of the main east-west watershed, dividing streams that flow north to the Solway Firth from those heading south to Morecambe Bay. To the east stand Helvellyn and Seat Sandal, while Steel Fell lies to the west. The modern A591 road follows this historic route, and a rare AA phone box remains in a layby south of the summit. A large cairn stands on the central reservation of the dual-carriageway, marking the pass’s namesake. The mound appears ancient but was disturbed during road construction. Local tradition claims it covers the grave of King Dunmail, slain by Saxons, though the name may instead refer to Dyfnwal ab Owain, King of Strathclyde in the 10th century. The cairn once served as a boundary marker between Westmorland and Cumberland, and possibly the southern edge of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. Visitors see the cairn framed by the two carriageways of the A591, a striking contrast of ancient and modern. The pass offers wide views across the surrounding fells, with Helvellyn’s slopes rising to the east. Beneath the road, the Thirlmere Aqueduct carries water from the reservoir to Manchester, passing through a tunnel at the summit. A water treatment plant sits at the southern portal, where the flow is filtered and treated before continuing its journey. The scene blends quiet folklore with the steady work of water supply, framed by the Lake District’s rugged hills.
