Gibson Knott

Gibson Knott is a fell in the English Lake District. It stands on the ridge between Greenburn and Far Easedale in the Central Fells. The ridge runs north to south, with High Raise as its highest point. Calf Crag forms a broad ridge east of High Raise, splitting into two arms near Greenburn’s head. One arm leads to Gibson Knott and Helm Crag. The ridge narrows between Calf Crag and Helm Crag, curving southeast for about one and a half miles. The fell’s summit features a few rocky knolls of similar height, with a cairn marking the western outcrop. Views from the top stretch in all directions, though they are not as wide as those from the centre of the Lake District. Moving east along the ridge slightly improves the outlook. The southern face above Far Easedale is rocky, with Horn Crag as its main feature. The northern side slopes gently down to Greenburn Bottom. Gibson Knott is often climbed as part of a circuit of Greenburn, following a clear path. Ascents from Grasmere are also possible, either side of Bracken Hause. The fell’s geology includes laminated volcaniclastic claystone and siltstone at the summit, with dacitic lapilli tuff covering the rest of the ridge. No mining has ever taken place in the area.
