Benromach

Benromach is a Speyside distillery near Forres in Moray. Founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman, it draws spring water from the Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills. The distillery closed soon after opening but reopened in 1900, only to close again during the First World War. It changed hands several times before Gordon and Macphail took over in 1993. The site was restored and reopened in 1998 by Charles, Prince of Wales. Today it is part of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail. The distillery is recognised for its traditional methods and award-winning whisky. Benromach 10 Years Old won gold at the World Whisky Awards 2014 in its category. Its annual output is around 400,000 litres of cask-strength whisky. The distillery also produces a vapour-infused gin called Red Door, named after its painted-red doors. A dedicated gin tour was launched in 2019, following the gin’s release the previous year. Visitors can see the dunnage warehouse, mash tun, and burnished copper stills. Inside, the distillery has a single stainless-steel mash tun holding 1.5 tonnes of mash. There are thirteen 11,000-litre larch wash backs and two copper stills, one wash still and one spirit still. The surrounding landscape includes the Romach Hills and Chapelton Springs. A cask signed by Prince Charles is displayed for visitors. The site blends historic charm with modern production, offering a quiet yet engaging experience in the heart of Speyside.
