River Findhorn

The River Findhorn is one of Scotland’s longest rivers, flowing 100 kilometres through the Highlands before reaching the Moray Firth. It begins high in the Monadhliath Mountains, where streams join near Dalbeg to form its headwaters. The river carves through steep valleys and wooded gorges, changing character as it descends. Strathdearn, its broad valley, stretches southwest until the river meets the sea. The Findhorn’s estuary is one of Scotland’s largest, where fresh and salt water mix in a tidal basin. Anglers travel from around the world for its salmon and trout fishing, while kayakers tackle its white-water sections, graded between two and four. The river’s name comes from the Gaelic Éire, meaning ‘west’, though it shares this with Ireland’s name. The valley, Srath Éireann, was once compared to the five Irish provinces in an old saying. Its upper reaches twist through unglaciated valleys, while downstream it passes farms, lodges and the first sizeable settlement at Tomatin. Near Forres, the river widens into Findhorn Bay, a vast tidal flat where burns merge before reaching the sea. Visitors follow the river’s winding path through forests, moorland and gorges. The Streens, a seven-kilometre defile, offers a remote and treeless stretch with no roads. Near Dulsie Bridge, the Findhorn turns north through a narrow gorge past Glenferness House and Ardclach bell tower. At Randolph’s Leap, the River Divie joins with a dramatic drop, creating kayaking challenges. The river passes historic sites like the hillfort of Dunearn and the ruins of Dun Earn. Finally, it flows past Logie House and the Altyre estate before reaching the village of Findhorn, where the river empties into the Moray Firth.
