St Michael's Church

St Michael’s Church stands on a hillside above the Hoffnant Valley, half a kilometre inland from Penbryn beach in Ceredigion. It is the oldest church in the diocese of St Davids and dates from the 12th century. The roof is likely to be 15th century, while the porch was added in the early 17th century. Windows were inserted in the early 19th century. The church was restored in 1887 by D. Davies of Penrhiwllan and again in 1957, possibly under A. D. R. Caroe. The interior is whitewashed with slate floors. A square limestone feature in the centre belongs to the original 12th-century building. The square font and the font in the porch also survive from the medieval period. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales recognises these early features. The church was awarded Grade I listed status in 1964. Visitors find a simple whitewashed interior with slate paving under a medieval roof. The central limestone square marks the original nave. Two medieval fonts stand in the nave and porch. Tall 19th-century windows let in clear light. The hillside setting gives views across the Hoffnant Valley to Penbryn beach beyond.
