Ill Bell

Ill Bell stands in the Lake District of Cumbria, a narrow ridge fell between Kentmere and Troutbeck valleys. It shares the ridge with Froswick to the north and Yoke to the south, forming a symmetrical bell shape. The western slope drops steeply to Hagg Gill, while the eastern side falls roughly to Kentmere Reservoir. Over and Rainsborrow Coves gouge the Kentmere face, creating narrow ridges. The fell’s profile resembles a roller-coaster when viewed from certain angles. The Kentmere Horseshoe is a popular walk that starts at Yoke and Ill Bell, returning along the opposite ridge. A clear path follows the ridge, making it the usual route to the summit. Another common ascent begins in Troutbeck valley via Garburn Road. Direct routes also exist from Hagg Gill or over Lead Howes from the reservoir. The summit is small and stony, marked by large columnar cairns for easy recognition. From the top, Ill Bell offers views of the Scafells, Windermere, and the Kentmere Horseshoe fells. Cross Fell and the Dun Fells in the Pennines are visible above Nan Bield Pass. The stony summit contrasts with the surrounding green valleys. The ridge walk provides changing perspectives of the landscape. The cairns guide walkers to the highest point.
