Ruine Bachenstein
The Burg Bachenstein stands as a ruined hilltop fortress two kilometres west of Döttingen in Braunsbach. It sits on a narrow ridge at 383 metres above sea level between two small valleys cut by the Rüblinger Bach and the Bachensteiner Bach. These streams join the Eschentaler Bach, which flows down to the Kocher river near Döttingen. The site commands views over the surrounding Muschelkalk hills and the wooded slopes of the valley. The Bachenstein family, named after the castle, first appear in records between 1225 and the 16th century. They were likely ministeriales of the Staufen emperors and built the castle before 1250. Walther Bacho of Döttingen is thought to have been the builder. By 1251 the family had adopted the name Bachenstein and ruled Döttingen as local lords. Some members also held property near Schwäbisch Hall and possessed the nearby Wasserburg Altenhausen and the Teurershof estate. Today only two deep defensive ditches and scattered masonry remain of the former stronghold. The ruins lie along a quiet woodland path that follows the old ridge line. Visitors find peaceful glades and open grassy clearings where the castle once stood. The surrounding beech and oak woods are rich in spring flowers and autumn fungi. From the highest point there is a wide view across the valley towards the spires of Braunsbach in the distance.
