Ruine Günzburg
The ruins of Günzburg stand on a narrow spur where a dry steep-sided valley once met the Eschentaler Bach. The site lies within the abandoned village of Günzburg, now part of Eschental in Kupferzell municipality. The spur itself is only a few metres above the stream below, giving the place a quiet, secluded feel. No written records survive to tell when the castle was built or who lived there. All that remains are low stone banks and a shallow ditch marking the old defences.
Historians think the castle was probably raised in the 12th or 13th century. Its position controlled the only easy route through the surrounding wooded hills. The spur ends abruptly, so attackers would have had to approach across a narrow neck of land. Despite its importance at the time, the castle vanished without a trace in the written sources.
Visitors today find a grassy mound with a slight rise at the far end. A low stone wall runs along the edge of the spur, showing where the outer wall once stood. The ditch beside it is still just deep enough to recognise. From the highest point there is a clear view down the valley towards the fields of Eschental. The silence and the scattered pieces of red sandstone are all that remain of Günzburg’s past.
