Neuer Jüdischer Friedhof Stadtschlaining
The new Jewish cemetery in Stadtschlaining lies on the western edge of the small town in Burgenland. It was opened in 1902 to replace an older burial ground. The site is protected by national heritage law. The cemetery’s rows of upright stone markers show the names of local families who once formed a thriving community. In 1997 and 1998 a low stone wall and a simple entrance arch were added to enclose the graves. The oldest legible dates on the headstones belong to the early 20th century. Visitors walk along gravel paths between the orderly rows of grey and white tombstones. The quiet space is shaded by a few young trees planted along the northern boundary. At the entrance stands a modest stone portal with a Hebrew inscription above the lintel.
