Protestant church in Stadtschlaining

The Evangelical parish church in Stadtschlaining stands in the upper part of the town in Burgenland. It occupies the site of the former Weißen Bastei, a defensive tower, and was built between 1783 and 1787. A tower was added in 1846. The church belongs to the Evangelical Superintendentur A. B. Burgenland and is protected as a listed building. The church is a classical-style hall with a rectangular sanctuary at the east end. A three-storey tower with a tall onion dome projects from the front. The nave has three aisles, the central one covered by a wide transverse barrel vault on sturdy Tuscan columns. Side aisles have longitudinal barrel vaults divided into two levels by balconies, their railings stretched between the columns. The organ balcony occupies the easternmost bay of the central aisle, supported on slender columns. Inside, a late-classical pulpit altar stands in an open screen wall between the nave and the apse, which serves as the sacristy. The altar was made in 1820 by master carpenter Georg Bitterle, sculptor Franz Müllner and gilder Karl Koch. It features a broad projecting cornice on six Tuscan pilasters, a white-painted wooden crucifix at the centre, and white-painted baroque-style figures of Peter and Moses in side niches. Above the cornice is a pulpit, flanked by vases and topped by putti and a figure of the Risen Christ. The previous altar now stands in the Evangelical church in Siget in der Wart. The large organ was built in 1788 by Franz Schwarz of Graz and rebuilt in 1887.
