Royal Observatory

The Royal Observatory sits on Blackford Hill in Edinburgh, a short distance from the city centre. It belongs to the Science and Technology Facilities Council and houses the UK Astronomy Technology Centre, the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Astronomy, and a visitor centre open to the public. The site replaced an earlier observatory on Calton Hill, which had operated since 1834 under the first Astronomer Royal for Scotland, Thomas Henderson. Before moving, the observatory provided accurate time signals to ships in Leith harbour and Edinburgh Castle via a wired time ball and gun. Charles Piazzi Smyth, the second Astronomer Royal, pioneered high-altitude observatories but resigned in 1888 when the government threatened to close the site. The observatory’s move to Blackford Hill in 1896 followed a donation from the Earl of Crawford, who gave his instruments and astronomical library on condition a new facility be built. Ralph Copeland, the third Astronomer Royal, oversaw the relocation and installation of a 15-inch refractor and a 24-inch reflector in separate domes. Research in the early 20th century improved pendulum clocks until quartz technology replaced them in the 1960s. A suffragette bomb damaged the building in 1913 but caused no injuries. By the 1950s the observatory shifted focus to photographic and photoelectric recording of stars. Visitors today find three main areas: the East Dome with its 15-inch refractor, the West Dome housing the 24-inch reflector, and a separate building containing an 8.5-inch transit circle. The visitor centre explains the work of the UK Astronomy Technology Centre and the university’s research programmes. The Crawford Collection, donated in 1888, remains a key resource in the observatory’s library. The surrounding hill offers views across Edinburgh while the domes and telescopes recall a century of astronomical progress.
