Holy Trinity Church, Bolton

Holy Trinity Church stands in Trinity Street in Bolton, a Grade II listed building converted from a redundant parish church into apartments. Philip Hardwick designed it in the early 19th century, and the Church Building Commission provided a grant of £13,924 for its construction. The church was declared redundant in 1993 and carefully restored before reopening as homes in 2014. Its Gothic Revival exterior features ashlar stone, slate roofs, and a tall west tower with clock dials and crocketed pinnacles. The seven-bay nave and shallow chancel are separated by buttresses topped with embattled parapets and pinnacles. The church’s architecture reflects the Perpendicular style, with tiered windows in the nave bays and lancet windows in the chancel. A nine-light east window lights the chancel, while the tower’s third stage houses clock dials. Inside, three-sided galleries line the nave, supported by five-bay arcades, and both nave and chancel have vaulted ceilings. Two paintings flank the chancel arch, one depicting the Nativity and the other the Ascension. Most original fittings have been removed, though the organ remains a notable feature. Visitors to the former church now find a quiet residential space where the organ, built in 1860, once played in Manchester Cathedral. The organ was moved here in 1874 and rebuilt several times, most recently in the mid-20th century. The building’s Gothic Revival details, including the embattled parapets and crocketed pinnacles, stand out against Bolton’s urban backdrop. The tower’s clock dials and bell openings add to its historic presence. The interior’s vaulted ceilings and galleries hint at its past as a place of worship.
