Octagon Theatre

The Octagon Theatre is a producing theatre in Bolton, Greater Manchester. It has two performance spaces: the Main Auditorium, which can be arranged in three different ways and seats 300 to 400 people, and the Bill Naughton Studio Theatre, which seats 100 and hosts new and experimental work. The building was designed by Geoffrey H. Brooks and opened in 1967 by Princess Margaret. The Octagon stages eight or nine professional productions each year, ranging from classic drama to musicals, with a recent focus on American plays by writers such as Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. It also runs workshops, Investigate Days, and hosts touring shows including children’s theatre and stand-up comedy. The theatre has a long history of nurturing local talent, including playwright Jim Cartwright, whose works were premiered there. Notable performers who have appeared at the Octagon include Freddie Mercury, Sir Ian McKellen, and actors from television soap operas. Visitors find a hexagonal building with flexible seating arrangements and a welcoming bar area. The theatre’s smaller studio space provides an intimate setting for experimental performances. The Octagon’s programme includes a mix of touring shows and locally produced plays, alongside educational and youth events. Its stage has hosted major names in British theatre and music, reflecting its role as a cultural hub in Bolton. The building itself has been adapted and expanded over the decades, most recently in 2021 after a major refurbishment.
