Ochsenkopf bei Rittersgrün

The Ochsenkopf near Rittersgrün is a modest mountain in Saxony’s Erzgebirgskreis. It stands close to the village of Rittersgrün and is reached by the Hammerberg Road. A short walk from the Waldburg restaurant, built in 1903–04, leads to the summit. The top is marked by pale schist rocks and a small rest area. Dense woodland covers the slopes, so the view from the summit itself is limited. The mountain is worth the journey for the views it does not give. Lower down, clearings and vantage points open onto the Pöhlwasser Valley. On clear days the skyline shows ridges between Auersberg and Morgenleithe. The Ochsenkopf also links to a longer walk: below its slopes sits the Rittersgrün waterworks, where a nearly 15-kilometre trail begins. Visitors find a quiet summit with scattered rocks and a bench. The route from the Waldburg restaurant climbs gently through beech and spruce. Halfway down, the waterworks marks the start of the long path to Fichtelberg. The forest paths are well kept, and the valley views reward those who pause on the lower slopes.
