Eisenhütten- und Fischereimuseum Peitz
The Eisenhütten- und Fischereimuseum Peitz stands in the small town of Peitz in the Spree-Neiße district of Brandenburg. The museum occupies the buildings of a former ironworks founded in the 16th century by Margrave Johann von Küstrin. After the ironworks closed around 1850, the site was repurposed for fish farming, which continues today in the surrounding area. The museum’s ironworks section displays the original 1810 blast furnace hall and foundry with its technical equipment. The carpentry roof structure made from beams is a notable feature. The fishery section highlights the region’s vast pond system, some dating back to the 16th century, and includes exhibits on inland fishing and angling. Both industries once supported the local military garrison in Peitz. Visitors can follow a 2.3-kilometre educational trail named after Professor Wilhelm Schäperclaus, suitable for walkers and cyclists. The trail winds through the ponds and offers guided weekend walks, festivals, and boat trips. Nearby, the Jänschwalde power station can also be visited. The museum’s surroundings blend industrial heritage with natural landscapes, providing a quiet yet informative experience.
