Château de Chambord

Château de Chambord stands in the heart of a vast wooded park in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. Built between 1519 and 1547, it is the largest château in the Loire Valley. Francis I commissioned it as a hunting lodge, though he visited only briefly. The design blends French medieval forms with Italian Renaissance structures. Domenico da Cortona drew the original plans, with possible influence from Leonardo da Vinci. The château’s layout centres on a massive keep with four corner towers and a decorative moat. Chambord is worth the journey for its extraordinary architecture and history. The building contains 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases, arranged in a cross-shaped plan. Its double-spiral staircase ascends without ever meeting, illuminated from above. The rooftop features 11 kinds of towers and three types of chimneys, resembling a town skyline. Henry James compared its towers and lanterns to spires, while John Evelyn praised its elaborate yet impractical design. The château’s façade stretches 128 metres, adorned with over 800 sculpted columns. Visitors find a grand yet unfinished palace surrounded by a 52.5-square-kilometre park. The interior reveals vaulted hallways, open windows, and high ceilings designed for short stays. Outside, red deer roam within a 31-kilometre wall. The park’s scale reflects Francis I’s ambition, though his dream of diverting the Loire never materialised. The château’s towers lack turrets, drawing comparisons to Milanese minarets. Despite its size, Chambord remains a symbol of Renaissance ambition and artistic vision.
