Vandanser Steinwand

The Vandanser Steinwand is a mountain ridge forming the northern edge of the Montafon valley in the village of Vandans. It stretches roughly from west-south-west to east-north-east, shielding Vandans from northerly winds. The ridge also marks the boundary between Vandans and Bürs, and further east between Vandans and Lorüns. Its length from the Brandner Mittagsspitze to the Steinwandeck is about six kilometres, with south-eastern faces rising up to a thousand metres high. The ridge is chiefly made of main dolomite, with older Raibler layers containing workable gypsum deposits. Notable peaks include the Zimba and the Roßkopf, both topped with summit crosses. The Great Hüttenkopf and the Kleine Valkastiel are also prominent summits along the crest. Hiking routes to the peaks usually take between three and six hours from the valley floor. The summits lie far apart, so good fitness, sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential. Paths are sometimes unsigned and should only be tackled in settled weather because of rockfall risk. The Sarotla Hut at 1,611 metres provides a practical base, from which the Great Hüttenkopf and the Zimba are readily reached.
