Breitenauriegel

The Breitenauriegel is a mountain in the Bavarian Forest in Niederbayern. It rises from the crest of the Vorderer Bavarian Forest near Bischofsmais, close to other summits such as the Geißkopf and Dreitannenriegel. The summit stands at 1,116 m above sea level. A summit rock with a cross marks the top, offering a view northwest towards Gotteszell. North of the peak lies the plateau of Oberbreitenau. The mountain is part of the Special Area of Conservation known as the Deggendorfer Vorwald. Paths from Habischried, Bischofsmais, Rusel and Rohrmünz lead to the summit, including a section of the Main-Danube Way called the Ostlinie. About 750 m southeast of the top is a works hut belonging to the Deggendorf branch of the mountain rescue service, the Bergwacht. Visitors reach the summit by following these footpaths, which wind through the surrounding forest. The summit rock and cross provide a clear landmark at the top. The view from the peak looks northwest over the landscape towards Gotteszell. The works hut nearby serves as a useful point of reference on the mountain. The protected status of the area ensures the landscape remains largely undisturbed.
