Stob an Aonaich Mhòir

Stob an Aonaich Mhòir is a mountain in the Grampian range of Scotland. It stands 855 metres high beside Loch Ericht in Perthshire. The loch stretches north–south between Glen Garry and the Ben Alder massif. A private road from Loch Rannoch leads to the foot of the mountain. The route is several miles long and crosses open moorland. Ben Alder’s slopes rise across the water on the far side of the loch. No public footpaths reach the summit directly. The mountain’s remoteness makes it a quiet place for experienced walkers. A bicycle is the fastest way to reach the starting point. The private road avoids public tracks and keeps the approach straightforward. Loch Ericht’s shoreline offers flat ground for setting off. Views of the surrounding Grampians open up as soon as the road ends. The massif of Ben Alder dominates the skyline across the water. At the top of Stob an Aonaich Mhòir the view stretches over the whole central Grampians. The summit ridge runs roughly north–south for about half a kilometre. To the east the land falls away towards Glen Truim. To the west the ground rises again towards the Ben Alder plateau. On clear days the peaks of Creag Meagaidh and Geal-Chàrn can be seen. The loch below reflects the sky and the surrounding hills.
