London Blossom Garden

The London Blossom Garden stands beside the London Stadium in Newham as a living memorial to those lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three interlocking circles of 33 blossom trees represent London’s 32 boroughs and the City of London. The trees were chosen because the first cases arrived in spring 2020, when blossoms were in bloom. The National Trust organised the planting and Bloomberg L.P. provided the funding. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, described it as a lasting tribute to lives lost and to the work of key workers. He said it would give Londoners a quiet place to reflect on what the city endured. The design symbolises how people came together to support one another through the crisis. Visitors walk among the circles of flowering trees, each circle marking a different part of the capital. The garden offers open space for quiet thought and gentle remembrance. In spring the petals drift like snow across the paths, creating a soft, seasonal beauty. It sits beside the stadium, linking sport and sorrow in the same landscape.
