London Velopark

Lee Valley VeloPark stands in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, east London. It is a cycling centre built for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and opened to the public in 2014. The site includes an indoor velodrome, an outdoor BMX racing track, a one-mile road course and five miles of mountain bike trails. The velodrome replaced the old Eastway Cycle Circuit, which had operated since 1975. Construction began in 2009 and finished in 2011, with the first major event being the 2011 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. The velodrome is notable for its lightweight roof designed by Ron Webb, who also built tracks for Sydney and Athens. It features a 250-metre Siberian pine track held by 350,000 nails and a 360-degree concourse with views of the park. The BMX track was designed by the UCI and includes a high starting ramp, challenging jumps and a rhythm section. After the Games the seating was removed and the track adapted for all abilities. The venue has hosted world championships and remains a key training base for British Cycling. Visitors find a smooth 250-metre wooden track inside the velodrome and a reconfigured BMX course outside. The road course winds through parkland and crosses the River Lee, linking to other London cycle routes. The velodrome’s roof collects rainwater and its windows let in natural light, reducing energy use. The BMX track’s 8-metre ramp and varied jumps provide a demanding ride. The surrounding park offers open spaces and views of the Olympic Park’s landmarks.
