Schloss Oberellen

Schloss Oberellen is a Renaissance manor house standing at the heart of the village of Oberellen in Thüringen, beside the local church. Built on the foundations of a former monastery farm, it began as a four-wing complex with solid ground floors. The main block faces east, while the church marks the southern edge of the site. A separate house known as the ‘White Castle’ was later added on the south side of the church, hinting at family disputes among the Hanstein owners. Over the centuries the estate passed through several branches of the Hanstein family after the original line died out in 1722. The building carries early-17th-century coats of arms above its main doorways, recording members of the Oberellen branch of the Hansteins. Between 1923 and 1928 the painter A. Paul Weber lived here, and from 1966 to 1986 the artist Karl Meusel worked and resided in the same rooms. Today the complex houses the village council offices, a public library and a small restaurant. The surviving parts of the four-wing structure still show the original Renaissance style, though barns and stables on the west and north sides have been replaced by modern buildings. The east wing remains the principal building, its stonework and doorways marking the transition from monastery farm to noble residence.
