Großer Geiger

The Großer Geiger is a striking 3,360-metre peak in the Venediger Group of the High Tauern, part of the Austrian Central Alps. It stands on the border between Tyrol to the south and Salzburg to the north, forming a dramatic landmark in the Upper Sulzbach valley. The mountain’s symmetrical pyramid shape rises sharply above the surrounding glaciers, especially its 350-metre northwest face with a 50° gradient. Three glaciers lie close to the summit: Obersulzbachkees to the north, Dorferkees to the east, and Maurerkees to the south and west. The nearest village is Hinterbichl in the Virgental valley, about 10 kilometres away. The Großer Geiger is a popular destination for mountaineers because of its accessibility and impressive appearance. It was first climbed in 1871 by Richard Issler and mountain guide Michael Groder, who set out from the Johannis Hut. The normal route today runs from either the Essener-Rostocker Hut or the Kürsinger Hut, crossing the western arête and climbing over firn to reach the summit. More challenging routes, graded III to IV, follow the northwest face and flanking arêtes, often combining ice and rock. The mountain’s isolation and dominance make it a distinctive feature in the landscape. Visitors to the area find themselves surrounded by high alpine scenery dominated by glaciers and rugged peaks. The Großvenediger, the highest mountain in the group at 3,667 metres, lies to the northeast, separated by the Obersulzbachtörl pass. The three Maurerkeesköpfe peaks stand along the western arête, adding to the dramatic skyline. The route from the huts offers views of crevassed glaciers and steep snowfields, with the final climb over the southwestern flank leading to the summit cross. The isolation of the Großer Geiger ensures a sense of wilderness, while its striking shape makes it a memorable sight in the High Tauern.
