Holt Copse & Joel Park

Holt Copse & Joel Park is a Local Nature Reserve in Wokingham, Berkshire, covering 5.3 hectares. The site includes an ancient semi-natural woodland called Holt Copse, which sits on the boundary between Bagshot beds and London Clay. Joel Park forms part of the larger 9.3-hectare area managed alongside the copse. Wokingham Town Council owns the land, while the Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers help maintain it. The reserve was officially declared in 2002 by Wokingham Borough Council. The site supports a variety of wildlife, including the common noctule bat and the speckled wood butterfly. Among its trees are field maple, hazel, holly, pedunculate oak and rowan. Wild plants such as cuckooflower and bluebell grow here as well. The woodland’s varied geology and long-standing management encourage these species to thrive. Its small size makes it easy to explore in a single visit. Visitors walk along paths that wind through the copse and parkland. The woodland’s dense canopy and open glades create different habitats in a compact space. Bluebells carpet the ground in spring, while summer brings butterflies to the rides. The reserve offers quiet spots to observe birds and bats at dusk. Its proximity to Wokingham town centre makes it a convenient place for short nature walks.
