All Saints' Church, Childwall

All Saints’ Church stands in Childwall, a suburb of Liverpool. It is the only medieval church left in the city’s metropolitan borough. The building is made of red sandstone and has a west tower, nave, chancel, aisles and a south porch. The tower was rebuilt in 1810–11 after its spire collapsed elsewhere in the city. Inside, the church has three arcades with octagonal columns and a wagon-vaulted chancel roof. The church is worth visiting for its long history and fine fittings. The chancel dates from the 14th century, and the south aisle and porch are from the 15th. Two chapels were added in the 18th century, and the north aisle was rebuilt in 1833 and again in 1900–05. William Warrington designed an enamelled brass for Major W. Pitcairn Campbell in 1855. The stained glass includes windows by Kempe and Heaton, Butler and Bayne. Visitors find box pews from the 1850s restoration and choir stalls designed for Liverpool Cathedral. A carved bench end from the early 1600s is displayed inside. The churchyard holds graves of the first Anglican Bishop of Liverpool and the poet William Watson. A sandstone hearse house from 1811 stands in the churchyard, and the tower has been used in the Hollyoaks soap opera.
