Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, Liverpool

Our Lady of the Annunciation Church stands next to Bishop Eton Monastery in Childwall, Liverpool. It was built between 1857 and 1858 by the Redemptorists and designed by E. W. Pugin. The church is on Woolton Road, opposite Liverpool Hope University’s Hope Park campus. It is close to Our Lady’s Bishop Eton Primary School and is a Grade II* listed building. The church replaced an earlier chapel built by Catholic priests James Sharples and George Brown in the 19th century. The church is worth visiting for its architectural and historical significance. Its high altar and tabernacle were designed by John Francis Bentley, who also created the pulpit and triptych. The stained glass includes work by Charles Eamer Kempe and Hardman & Co. The church became a parish church in 1961, and the Redemptorists served both this parish and St Mary’s Church, Woolton, until 2025. A fire in 1973 caused damage that was later repaired. Inside, visitors find a church rich in craftsmanship and detail. The west window and north chapel feature notable stained glass. The high altar, tabernacle, pulpit, and triptych reflect the work of skilled designers. The surroundings include the monastery and nearby school, adding to the sense of community. The church remains a place of worship and a landmark in Liverpool’s Catholic heritage.
