St Basil's Church, Deritend

St Basil’s Church stands in Deritend, a district on the east side of Birmingham. Built between 1910 and 1911 to designs by Arthur Stansfield Dixon, the red-brick building replaced earlier parish churches. Its name recalls the 19th-century division of the Bordesley parishes into Holy Trinity and St Andrew’s. In 1939 the church merged with St John’s Deritend to form one benefice. By 1978 the building closed for worship and passed to new uses. The church is now the St Basil Centre, a charity that supports young people across Birmingham. Its Harrison and Harrison organ of 1911 once filled the nave with sound. After closure the instrument moved to Worcester Cathedral, preserving its craftsmanship. The building itself remains a Grade II listed example of Dixon’s work. The centre continues the parish’s long tradition of community care. Inside, tall windows of Arts and Crafts style light the former nave. The organ’s former position can still be seen on the west wall. The space now hosts workshops, advice sessions and creative projects. Outside, Deritend’s terraced streets and canal towpaths frame the red-brick façade. The centre’s work links the church’s past with the needs of today’s young people.
