Eastside Projects

Eastside Projects is an artist-run gallery in Digbeth, Birmingham. It occupies a converted warehouse and shows experimental contemporary art. Six artists founded it in 2008 and still guide its direction. The space is run by practising artists who also work in the wider art world. It commissions new work and explores how art can be useful to society. The gallery has built Birmingham’s reputation as a centre for contemporary art. It has shown artists such as Liam Gillick, Sonia Boyce and Dan Graham. Past exhibitions have focused on sculpture, books and painting as mediums. The building itself is treated as an artwork, with staff offices designed by artists. Long-term works include Jennifer Tee’s totemic sculpture ‘Local Myths’ and Matthew Harrison’s door handle piece. Visitors find a flexible gallery where walls and floors change with each show. The front door opens to Harrison’s welcoming text in four languages. Inside, Heather and Ivan Morison’s wooden office ‘Pleasure Island’ remains as part of the space’s history. The gallery hosts talks, workshops and the annual Members Show. It continues to support artists through associate membership and long-term residencies.
