Sandor-Petöfi-Denkmal

The Sándor Petőfi Monument stands in the Park an der Ilm in Weimar, a city known for its literary heritage. A bronze bust of the Hungarian poet and revolutionary is mounted on a concrete pedestal designed by P. Molnár. The inscription on the pedestal names Petőfi and the years of his life, 1823 to 1849. Petőfi admired Goethe and is celebrated in Hungary for his poetry and role in the 1848 revolution. The monument was a gift from the Petőfi Literary Museum in Budapest to Weimar, marking a new cultural agreement between East Germany and Hungary. It was unveiled on 26 March 1976 during a period of strengthened ties between the two countries. Visitors find the bust set in a quiet corner of the park, surrounded by trees and pathways. The inscription on the pedestal is clearly visible, and the bronze surface reflects the light filtering through the leaves. The monument offers a place to pause and consider the connections between Weimar’s classical past and wider European literary traditions.
