Birnam Arts

Birnam Arts stands in the village of Birnam, Perthshire, central Scotland. It began in 1883 as the Birnam Institute, built to plans by John Kinnaird, the village stationmaster. The original building housed a library, reading room, hall, refreshment and games room, and caretaker’s rooms. Public baths were added in 1890. During both world wars the Institute served as military accommodation and entertainment space. The centre is now owned by the community and run as a not-for-profit arts venue. A major renovation in the late 1990s turned the ageing building into a modern arts and conference facility. Fundraising and careful planning allowed the work to finish in 2001. Today it balances arts, learning and heritage under one roof. Inside, visitors find a 170-seat auditorium for performances. Dance and drama workshops share space with meeting rooms and a foyer café. A public library sits alongside art exhibitions and community learning offices. A permanent display honours Beatrix Potter, who once lived nearby. The building’s mix of old stone and new glass opens onto quiet village streets.
