Monument to 6th Duke of Atholl, The Cross, Dunkeld

The monument stands in the heart of Dunkeld, a small town in Perth and Kinross. It takes the form of a drinking fountain and replaces an earlier cross that once stood about six metres high. The iron jougs that once hung from the old cross have disappeared. Charles Sandeman Robertson designed the new structure in 1866. It serves as a memorial to George Murray, the sixth Duke of Atholl. The fountain occupies a small triangular plot between two streets. To the north and west lies The Cross, while High Street borders it on the south and east. The site is surrounded by buildings that add to the town’s character. The Duchess Anne, The Ell Shop and the Perth Arms Hotel stand nearby. Visitors find a quiet corner where the fountain marks the old market cross. The iron basin still holds water for passers-by. The surrounding streets lead to shops and cafés. The National Trust for Scotland maintains the monument. The contrast between the old jougs and the new fountain shows how the town has changed.
