Europäisches Museum für modernes Glas

The European Museum of Modern Glass stands in the Schlosspark Rosenau in Rödental, Upper Franconia. Its light-filled new building houses one of Europe’s leading collections of studio glass from the 1960s to today. Alongside vessels and sculptures, large installations show how artists have stretched the limits of the material. A separate ceramics collection complements the glass holdings. The museum is a branch of the Veste Coburg art collections, linking historic and contemporary art. The museum’s significance comes from the Coburg Glass Prize, launched in 1977 by director Heino Maedebach. The prize gave early support to the studio-glass movement, when artists broke free from factory methods to work in small studios. Many winning pieces entered the collection permanently, including Věra Lišková’s fused-glass sculpture Music and Ann Wolff’s etched vessels. Later competitions in 1985, 2006, 2014 and 2022 charted the medium’s evolution, from painted heads to monumental light installations and socially engaged themes. Inside, visitors find rooms arranged chronologically around the prize winners. Early works sit beside later experiments with scale and mixed media. Outside, the park setting offers quiet walks between the museum and the Orangerie where the collection began. The displays let each piece speak for itself, while the changing exhibitions introduce new voices. The whole place shows how glass can be both fragile and forceful, a mirror of light and a carrier of ideas.
