Gschnitzer Tribulaun

The Gschnitzer Tribulaun is a 2,946-metre peak in the eastern Stubai Alps, standing on the Alpine main ridge. It rises above the Tribulaun ridge, which is made of main dolomite from the Triassic period resting on ancient gneiss, amphibolite and phyllitic mica-schist. The border between Austria and Italy has crossed its summit since 1919, with the Gschnitztal valley on the northern Tirol side and the Pflerschtal valley on the southern South-Tyrol side. It is lower than its neighbour, the Pflerscher Tribulaun, and offers an easier climb. The mountain is a popular choice for hikers because of its manageable ascent and striking views. Most climbers start from the Tribulaunhütte on the Austrian side, where a well-marked route leads up steep scree fields in the Schneetal valley. After about two and a half to three hours the path reaches the Schneetalscharte col at 2,642 metres, then crosses a steep step equipped with fixed ropes before reaching the broad southern ridge and the summit. From the col, another marked trail comes up from the south through the Italian Pflerschtal or from the Tribulaunhütte there, though this route involves more climbing and a longer detour around the Pflerscher Tribulaun. The final ridge walk offers wide views across the Stubai Alps and into South Tyrol, making the effort worthwhile for anyone who enjoys mountain scenery.
