Weikersheim Palace

Schloss Weikersheim stands in the small town of Weikersheim in Baden-Württemberg, a Renaissance palace built on the site of a medieval castle. The Lords of Hohenlohe first occupied the castle in the 12th century, and Count Wolfgang reconstructed it in the late 16th century. His wife Magdalena was a sister of William the Silent of Orange, linking the palace to one of Europe’s key Protestant figures. The tall bergfried tower was kept as a reminder of the castle’s origins. In the early 18th century, Count Carl Ludwig redecorated the interiors and gardens in Baroque style. The palace is worth visiting for its layered history and the figures who shaped it. The division of the Hohenlohe lands in 1586 gave Weikersheim a leading role among three brotherly seats. After World War II, Prince Constantin, an artist, restored the building and organised operas and concerts. In 1967 the state took ownership, preserving the palace for public tours. Today it also hosts summer music events and a conservative think tank. Visitors walk through Renaissance rooms and a Baroque garden filled with statues. The palace interiors reflect the tastes of Count Carl Ludwig in the 18th century. Outside, the garden paths lead past fountains and sculpted figures. The tower still rises above the roofline, marking the medieval core. Weddings and gatherings take place in the restored halls, linking past and present.
