Cultural heritage D-2-7338-0116 in Weihmichl

The lost Schloss Weihmichl once stood in a marshy lowland where the Pfettrach river and Edenlander Bächlein stream meet. Its remains lie 190 metres south-west of the parish church of St Willibald in the village of Weihmichl, Lower Bavaria. The site appears on the 19th-century Bavarian land register as a moated complex with a bridge across the ditch on the south-east side and an extra house outside the water defences. The castle’s last visible traces vanished in the 20th century when the moat was filled in. Before drainage improvements, the area flooded several times each year until the 1970s. Today only underground medieval and early modern features survive beneath later buildings. Archaeologists record the footprints of earlier structures and demolished wings beneath the vanished palace. Visitors see a quiet village edge with no castle walls above ground. The church of St Willibald marks the spot, while the former water meadows are now farmyards and homes. The only hint of the old moat is a slight dip in the land near the Edenlander Bächlein. The site is recognised as a protected archaeological monument under number D-2-7338-0116.
