St John the Evangelist's Church, Kirkdale

St John the Evangelist’s Church stands in Fountains Road, Kirkdale, an active Roman Catholic parish church in Liverpool’s north pastoral area. The building was designed by J. and B. Sinnott and completed in 1885. It is listed at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. A north chapel was added in 1927 to extend the original plan. The church sits within a quiet residential street, its stone walls and slate roof marking it out clearly. The church’s exterior mixes rock-faced stone with ashlar bands and dressings, giving it a solid, dignified appearance. The nave and chancel form one continuous space beneath a waggon roof inside. Four-bay arcades on round columns carry the roof, while the chancel arcade uses clustered columns. The west gallery overlooks the nave, and the organ loft occupies the north transept. Wrought-iron reredos and a 1898 altar designed by Pugin & Pugin add to the interior’s craftsmanship. Outside, the west window shows five-light Geometrical tracery, and paired two-light clerestory windows sit between buttresses. The south transept has its own five-light window, and each chapel contains a rose window. A turret with a belfry rises at the southeast corner under an octagonal roof. The southwest porch has a pointed arch and shaped gable, completing the church’s varied stonework.
