Dragon School

The Dragon School is a private preparatory school in North Oxford, operating on two sites for children aged four to thirteen. Founded in 1877 as the Oxford Preparatory School, it began as a boys’ school before later admitting girls. The school moved to its current Bardwell Road location in 1894, after raising funds from local parents. Originally called Lynam’s, it gradually became known as the Dragon School. The name honours Saint George, chosen by the Oxford dons who established it. The school has a long tradition of academic achievement, including success in the Harrow History Prize. Many of its former pupils, known as Old Dragons, have gone on to notable careers. Among them are Kit Lynam, an early prize winner, and several heads of the school from the Lynam family. The school’s alumni include prominent figures across different fields. Teachers have also made their mark, such as PJ Wilson, an Olympic hockey player. Visitors to the Dragon School will find two well-organised sites along Bardwell Road and Richards Lane. The main buildings reflect the school’s history, with some dating back to the 19th century. Dragon Lane runs beside the western edge of the school grounds. The atmosphere remains rooted in its academic heritage while adapting to modern education. The school’s legacy is visible in its continued focus on excellence.
