Orchard Theatre

The Orchard Theatre stands in the centre of Dartford, Kent, a 1,025-seat receiving theatre built for touring shows. The Duke of Kent opened it in April 1983 after Dartford Borough Council commissioned the building. It programmes popular music, comedy, family shows, dance, drama, classical concerts and variety, plus an annual pantomime. Since March 2021 it has been operated by Trafalgar Entertainment, which took over from HQ Theatres in 2008. The theatre’s programme draws acts from across the performing arts, giving Dartford a venue for touring West End shows and national comedy tours. In September 2023 Dartford Council closed the building temporarily because reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete in the roof posed safety risks. Performances moved to a temporary site called Orchard West while engineers assessed the structure. Inside, the auditorium seats over a thousand on one level, with a wide stage and modern technical systems. The foyer displays posters of past productions and a small café serves interval drinks. Outside, the theatre sits among shops and cafés in Dartford’s high street, a short walk from the railway station.
