River Cray

The River Cray winds through outer south-east London, rising in Priory Gardens in Orpington where chalk bedrock feeds a small pond before the water turns north. It flows past St Mary Cray and St Paul’s Cray, where paper mills once stood, then enters Foots Cray Meadows beneath the Five Arches bridge built in 1781 to Capability Brown’s designs. The river passes restored Loring Hall, home of Lord Castlereagh, and continues through North Cray and Bexley by a Gothic cold plunge bath house built around 1766. After joining the River Shuttle it passes Hall Place, built in 1540 for John Champneys, before turning east to meet the Darent at Dartford Creek. The river is cared for by local groups: the Cray Anglers Conservation Group organises clean-ups and angling rules, while the Dartford and Crayford Restoration Trust maintains the tidal section and arranges Lengthsman duties. A signposted public footpath called the Cray Riverway runs for about 16 kilometres alongside the river from Foots Cray Meadows north to the Thames, forming part of the London LOOP. The river is recognised as a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. Fourteen watermills once stood along its course, each with its own history of machinery and owners. Visitors can walk the Cray Riverway to see the Five Arches bridge, restored Loring Hall and the Gothic bath house near Vale Mascal Estate. Foots Cray Meadows offers parkland walks beside the water, and Hall Place stands near the river’s banks with its 16th-century house and grounds. The route passes former mill sites at St Mary Cray and St Paul’s Cray where paper making once thrived. Dartford Creek lies at the river’s end, a partly tidal inlet bordered by Crayford Marshes and Dartford Marshes. The villages along the Cray are known collectively as ‘The Crays’.
