Kloster Gräfinthal

Kloster Gräfinthal stands in the quiet Letschenbach valley near Mandelbachtal in the Saarland. It began in the 13th century when Countess Elisabeth of Blieskastel founded a hermitage here after recovering from an eye complaint before a small wooden image known as Our Lady of the Arrows. The site became a major pilgrimage centre for the Madonna with the Arrows, attracting visitors from across the region. By the 18th century the monastery flourished under Polish exiles including King Stanislaus Leszczynski, who rebuilt the church and buried his daughter Anna in its nave. The queen herself, Katharina Opalińska, draped the sacred image in a rich mantle during a solemn ceremony. The monastery’s history is marked by destruction and renewal. After the monks left in 1785 the buildings passed through secular hands and were used for silk production before becoming a private chapel. The surviving choir was restored in 1809 and rededicated in 1948 after wartime damage. Inside, fragments of the original Baroque furnishings survive, including carved confessionals and a pulpit by Johann Martersteck now in St Markus church at Gersheim-Reinheim. The high altar found its way to Bliesmengen-Bolchen, while a 15th-century Madonna on the crescent moon replaced the lost Arrows image. Today the site is once again a Benedictine priory of the Olivetans, settled since 1993. Archaeologists have uncovered what may be the tomb of Anna Leszczynska, daughter of the Polish king, beneath the ruined nave. Work is under way to stabilise the chapel and reopen it to pilgrims. The valley’s slopes once grew the celebrated ‘Mother-of-God wine’, praised by the 19th-century writer August Becker. A quiet path leads past the old gatehouse where secret talks about the Saar’s future took place in 1952, adding a modern layer to this centuries-old place of faith and memory.
