Eas Dubh

Eas Dubh stands beside the River Lonan in Argyll and Bute, a Highland glen where steep slopes channel heavy rain into fast streams. The name comes from Gaelic, ‘eas’ meaning waterfall and ‘dubh’ meaning black, describing the dark plunge pool below the fall. Highland rivers often drop in a single leap where hard rock meets softer layers, and Eas Dubh is one of many such falls scattered across the mountains. The wet western climate keeps the flow strong all year, feeding the black water that gives the place its name. Visitors walk up the glen on rough tracks used by hill farmers for centuries. The falls lie off the main roads, reached after a short climb through heather and birch. Scotland counts more than 150 named waterfalls, most in the Highlands where the land rises sharply from sea level. Highland place names still carry Gaelic words like ‘eas’ and ‘linn’, reminders of the language once spoken by everyone here. ‘Linn’ can mean a fall, a deep pool or a narrow stretch of water, which sometimes causes confusion. Another word, ‘spout’, appears in English-speaking areas, while Gaelic speakers use ‘sput’. Eas Dubh is listed among the highest single-drop falls, though records depend on how the height is measured. A path leads to the brink of Eas Dubh, where the river plunges over a dark lip into a deep pool below. The surrounding glen is quiet except for the roar of water and the cry of ravens. Visitors can follow the river upstream to smaller cascades or look down from the opposite bank. The black water reflects the grey sky on wet days, while in summer sunlight it shows a greenish tint. The falls are not marked with signs, so walkers must keep to the old stalkers’ paths. From the top, the view stretches over rolling moorland towards the sea.
