Kinord Castle

Kinord Castle stands on Castle Island in Loch Kinord, south of Old Kinord in Aberdeenshire. Built in the 14th century, it was first mentioned in 1335 when supporters of David de Strathbogie took shelter there after the battle of Culblean. The castle later served as a mansion for Alexander Gordon, Earl of Huntly, in 1511. It was restored and garrisoned in 1646 before being destroyed by an act of Parliament in 1648. The castle’s history reflects its strategic importance during the 14th and 15th centuries. Its ruins remain visible above ground, offering a glimpse of its past. The site was used again in the 17th century when military forces occupied it before its final destruction. Visitors reach the island by boat and find only slight traces of the castle’s walls. The surrounding Loch Kinord, set in a peaceful landscape, provides a quiet place to walk and enjoy the scenery. The island itself is small, with little remaining of the structure, but the setting adds to its historical atmosphere.
