Morvern

Morvern is a quiet peninsula on Scotland’s west coast, bounded by Loch Sunart to the north, Loch Linnhe to the south-east and the Sound of Mull to the south-west. Its highest point is Creach Bheinn at 853 metres, and the land covers about 650 square kilometres. The name comes from the Gaelic for ‘the sea-gap’, and the peninsula once formed part of the old district of Kinelvadon. Two ruined castles recall its medieval past: Ardtornish, held by Somerled in the 12th century, and Kinlochaline, seat of the MacInnes clan. Before the Highland clearances the population reached about 2,500, but today fewer than 350 people live here. The peninsula’s history is visible in scattered Mesolithic tools found after forestry planting in 2010, and Bronze Age remains lie nearby. In 1930 islanders from St Kilda were resettled at Lochaline, the main village, after the island’s evacuation. A local development trust was set up in 1999 to support the community, and the reopened Lochaline silica mine now supplies sand for solar panels. At Drimnin, Nc’nean distillery produces Scotch whisky, and the Ardtornish estate gained permission in 2010 for a small housing project west of Lochaline. Visitors follow single-track roads that wind past hills and lochs to quiet shores. The ferry from Lochaline crosses to the Isle of Mull in minutes, while the ruined castles stand on wooded slopes above the water. At Kinlochaline the remains of the MacInnes stronghold overlook the narrows, and nearby Loch Aline offers calm reflections of the surrounding hills. The peninsula’s scattered crofts and small woodland patches give a sense of a place shaped by sea and forest rather than by crowds.
