Loch Aline

Loch Aline is a small salt-water loch in Morvern, Lochaber, set between rolling hills and wooded slopes. Kinlochaline Castle stands on its southern shore, a 16th-century tower with a restored gatehouse. Ardtornish Castle overlooks the loch from the north, its ruins framed by mature trees. The Ardtornish estate occupies the head of the loch, where the River Aline meets the water. Lochaline village lies on the north bank at the loch’s mouth, its white-painted cottages facing the water. The loch supports fish, waterfowl and game birds year round. Kinlochaline Castle is privately owned but visible from the shore path. Ardtornish Castle’s remains date from the 14th century and are recognised as a scheduled monument. The Ardtornish estate offers woodland walks and shoreline views along the final stretch of the River Aline. Lochaline’s small harbour shelters boats used for local fishing and leisure trips. Visitors find quiet paths along both shores, leading past Kinlochaline Castle and through the Ardtornish estate. The castle gatehouse is open to inspection, its restored stonework showing original gun loops. The estate’s woodland trails rise gently to viewpoints over the loch and surrounding hills. Lochaline’s waterfront offers benches where people watch seals and wading birds. At dusk, the reflections of the hills on the loch’s surface create a calm scene.
